In short
- "Link in bio" means the clickable link is on the creator's profile page, not in the post itself.
- Instagram doesn't make links in captions clickable, so creators send people to their profile instead.
- On TikTok, the website link in your profile needs 1,000+ followers on a personal account, or a business account.
- The page behind your link matters more than the link: put your best offer first and make checkout work on a phone.
You've seen it under thousands of posts: "link in bio". It means the creator has put a clickable link on their profile page, and they want you to go there to find the thing they're talking about, whether that's a product, a free guide, a video or a sign-up page. This guide explains why people say it, where to find the link on each app, and how to make yours work if you're the one selling.
Why creators say "link in bio"
On Instagram, links typed into a post caption or a comment aren't clickable. The profile is one of the few places a link works, so creators point people there. Instagram now lets you add up to five links to your profile, but the link shown first gets most of the taps.
TikTok works in a similar way: a post can't hold a normal website link, so the profile link is where viewers go. Shopify's July 2026 guide says the website link on a TikTok profile is available to personal accounts with more than 1,000 followers, or to verified business accounts (you need to be 18 or older to verify one).
Where to find the link in someone's bio
- Tap the creator's name or profile photo above the post.
- On their profile, look just under the bio text for a link (on Instagram it's usually blue or shows a chain icon; on TikTok it sits under the bio).
- Tap it. If there are several links on Instagram, tap the first one and a list of the others opens.
What is a link-in-bio page?
Because you only get one main link, most creators don't link to a single product. They link to a link-in-bio page: one mobile page that holds everything they want to share, such as their latest video, a free download, their products and their socials. Linktree made the idea popular; today many tools offer it, and some, like Insidemetics, add a full store with checkout to that page.
| Link list | Link-in-bio store | |
|---|---|---|
| What's on it | Buttons that go to other sites | Your products, with checkout on the same page |
| Taps to buy | Bio, then a button, then another site's checkout | Bio, then product, then pay |
| Who keeps the buyer's email | The site you send them to | You |
| Good for | Sharing many places you post | Selling ebooks, templates, presets, courses and calls |
How to make your bio link work
- Put your best offer first. Most visitors only look at the top of the page.
- Say what you want them to do in your bio text, for example "Free meal plan below".
- Match the page to your posts: if your reel is about a preset pack, the preset pack should be the first thing on the page.
- Make checkout work in two or three taps on a phone, with instant delivery by email.
- Offer a free download for people who aren't ready to buy, so you can email them later.
- Check your page on a phone after every change.
