In short

  • Stan Store is a subscription: $29 or $99 a month, with 0% taken from your sales.
  • Gumroad has no subscription: it takes 10% + $0.50 a sale through your own link, and 30% through its Discover marketplace.
  • At a $20 price, Stan's $29 plan costs less than Gumroad's fee from about 12 sales a month.
  • Gumroad handles sales tax and VAT as merchant of record; with Stan, that's on you.

Stan Store and Gumroad are two of the most common ways creators sell digital products, but they charge in opposite ways. Stan charges a monthly fee and takes nothing from your sales; Gumroad charges nothing monthly and takes a cut of each sale. This guide compares the two on cost and features, using Stan's pricing article and Gumroad's pricing page and help center, checked in October 2026.

Which costs less

Example: monthly cost at a $20 product price (illustrative, payment processing left out of both)
Sales a monthRevenueGumroad (10% + $0.50)Stan Creator ($29)Stan Creator Pro ($99)
5$100$12.50$29$99
12$240$30$29$99
40$800$100$29$99
100$2,000$250$29$99

Gumroad is cheaper while you're making a handful of sales. Somewhere around 12 sales a month at $20, Stan's Creator plan starts to cost less, and at 40 sales even Creator Pro is about level with Gumroad. Cheaper products move the break-even point up, because Gumroad's fixed $0.50 weighs more on a low price.

Where Stan Store is stronger

  • No cut of your sales, so you keep more as you grow.
  • Instagram AutoDM on the $29 plan, so a comment can send your link by DM.
  • A booking calendar for calls, a course builder and recurring subscriptions on both plans.
  • A store built for phones, designed to sit behind your bio link.

Where Gumroad is stronger

  • Nothing to pay until you sell, which suits your first product.
  • A marketplace, Discover, where new buyers can find you (at a 30% fee).
  • Merchant of record since January 2025, so it collects and remits sales tax and VAT where it has an obligation.

A third option

We build Insidemetics, so read this knowing we're biased. Insidemetics sits between the two: a flat $29 (Pro) or $59 (Business) a month like Stan, 0% of your sales, and discount codes, order bumps and upsells on the $29 plan, which Stan keeps for its $99 plan. Instagram Auto DM is included with no cap on DMs. Buyers pay into your own PayPal account (and your own Razorpay account for buyers in India). Like Stan, we're not a merchant of record, so sales tax and VAT are yours to handle. There's a 7-day free trial with no card needed.
