How to Sell Ebooks Online in India: The Complete 2026 Guide

Everything you need to sell an ebook directly to readers in India: format, pricing, UPI payments and fees, delivery, file protection, GST, and a launch plan that works from Instagram.

In short

  • Selling directly from your own page means you set the price, keep the buyer's email and get paid to your bank on a T+2 cycle.
  • PDF suits designed books and workbooks; EPUB suits long reading on phones. You can include both in one product.
  • On Razorpay's standard plan, a ₹299 ebook costs about ₹7.06 in gateway fees; with no platform commission you keep about ₹291.94.
  • A free chapter in exchange for an email builds the list your launch sales will come from.

If people already follow you for a topic — cooking, fitness, design, exams, money — an ebook is the simplest product you can sell. It costs nothing to reproduce, it's delivered instantly, and buyers in India can pay for it by UPI in a few taps. This guide covers the whole path from file to first sale, with the numbers you need to price it properly.

Marketplace or your own store?

There are two broad ways to sell an ebook: list it on a large ebook marketplace, or sell it yourself from a page you control. Marketplaces bring their own shoppers, but you follow their pricing rules, they take a share of each sale, and you usually never learn who bought. Selling directly suits creators who already have an audience: you choose the price, you get the buyer's email, and the money lands in your own bank account.

Many creators do both: a marketplace listing for discovery, and a direct store for their own audience where they keep more and build a list.

Step 1: Pick the format

PDF is the default for directly sold ebooks. It looks identical on every device, keeps your fonts, images and tables exactly where you put them, and opens without any special app. EPUB is the better reading experience for long, text-first books, because the text reflows to the screen — a big deal for readers on phones.

  • Recipe books, workbooks, planners, guides with screenshots: PDF.
  • Novels and long non-fiction: EPUB, with a PDF included for people who prefer it.
  • Compress images before exporting. A 10–20 MB PDF downloads comfortably on mobile data; a 200 MB one won't.
  • Put your name, store link and a short 'how to reach me' page at the end of the book — it's where happy readers look.

Step 2: Price it

Price the outcome, not the page count. A 40-page guide that gets someone through an exam or saves them a week of setup is worth more than a 200-page general read. A practical way to set your first price:

  1. Write down the single result the book gives the reader.
  2. Note what the alternative costs them — a course, a coaching session, or hours of their time.
  3. Pick a price that's clearly smaller than that alternative, ending in 9 (₹199, ₹299, ₹499).
  4. Launch at a lower price with the regular price struck through, and tell readers when it goes up.

Step 3: Take payments by UPI

UPI is how India pays online: NPCI reported 24.07 billion UPI transactions worth ₹29.37 lakh crore in September 2026 alone. Your checkout must support it. A payment gateway such as Razorpay accepts UPI, cards, netbanking and wallets once your account passes KYC, and settles the money to your bank — on its standard cycle, two working days after the payment.

Step 4: Deliver automatically — only after payment is confirmed

Readers expect the book within seconds of paying. The standard approach is an email receipt containing private download links. Two details matter more than they look:

  • Deliver only after the payment gateway confirms the payment to your server (a signed webhook or a server-side check). A browser saying 'success' isn't proof — that's how fake or failed payments get free copies.
  • Use download links that expire. If a buyer forwards the email weeks later, the link no longer works.

Step 5: Build a list with a free chapter

Give away the first chapter, or a one-page checklist from the book, in exchange for an email address. People who download it have already read your writing and are the most likely to buy the full book. Send them one genuinely useful email a week while you finish the book, then a launch offer.

Step 6: Launch from Instagram, YouTube and WhatsApp

  1. Two weeks out: share what's inside — a recipe, a page, a before/after — with the free chapter as the call to action.
  2. Launch day: email your list first with the launch price and when it ends, then post. Use a story link sticker that goes straight to the product page.
  3. Launch week: reply to every question in public, and share what readers say about the book (with their permission).
  4. Price goes up: tell your audience a day before. Deadlines move people who were going to buy 'later'.

After launch, keep one product featured at the top of your store and point every relevant post at it. Instagram lets you show up to five links on your profile, but one clear destination usually converts better than five.

Step 7: Keep records for GST and income tax

Ebooks are generally treated as a digital service under GST, typically at 18%. Whether you need to register depends on your annual turnover — for service providers the general threshold is ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura). Download your sales report and your gateway's settlement reports every month; your CA will ask for both.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a company or GST number to sell an ebook in India?

No. Individuals can sell, and payment gateways such as Razorpay onboard individuals and sole proprietors after KYC. GST registration is generally required only once your turnover crosses the threshold.

Can readers outside India buy my ebook?

Yes, if your payment gateway has approved you for international payments. Razorpay reviews this separately and asks for clear website policies. Buyers abroad pay in rupees and their bank converts the amount.

How do I stop people sharing my ebook?

Use expiring download links so forwarded emails stop working. Beyond that, focus on value buyers can't get from a shared file: updates, bonuses and access to you.
