Aggregate turnover counts all your taxable, exempt and export supplies across India under the same PAN.

You likely don't need to register yet

₹8,00,000 is below the ₹20,00,000 threshold. Selling to buyers in other states doesn't change this for service providers below the threshold (Notification 10/2017–Integrated Tax).

General information, not tax advice. Rules change and depend on what exactly you sell — confirm with a chartered accountant. Read the full GST guide for creators.

How it works

  1. Service providers must generally register once aggregate turnover in a financial year exceeds ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura).
  2. Aggregate turnover is all-India, under the same PAN, and includes taxable, exempt and export supplies.
  3. Selling to buyers in other states doesn't force registration below the threshold for service providers (Notification 10/2017–Integrated Tax).
  4. Once liable, you apply for registration within 30 days.

Questions

What GST rate applies to ebooks and online courses?

Digital services such as ebooks and recorded or automated online courses are generally taxed at 18%. Courses run by recognised educational institutions can be exempt. Confirm the classification of each product with your CA.

I sell to buyers all over India. Do I need GST because it's inter-state?

Not for services below the threshold. Notification 10/2017–Integrated Tax exempts persons making inter-state supplies of taxable services from registration while their aggregate turnover stays within ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in special category states).

Should I register voluntarily?

Sometimes. Registering lets you claim input tax credit and issue GST invoices that some business buyers want — but you then charge GST on every sale and file returns. A CA can tell you whether it's worth it for you.
