How to Sell Notes Online in India (and Earn From Them)

Turn your study notes into a PDF that students pay for by UPI: what sells, what's not allowed, pricing, a free sample, and where to find buyers on Instagram, Telegram and WhatsApp.

In short

  • Sell only notes you wrote yourself. Copies of textbooks, coaching material or someone else's notes break copyright law.
  • One clean PDF per subject or chapter set, priced ₹99–₹499, sells better than a folder of loose scans.
  • Give one chapter away free. Students who like it are the ones who buy the full set.
  • On Razorpay's standard plan, a ₹199 set costs about ₹4.70 in fees; with no platform commission you keep about ₹194.30.

If you've topped a subject, cleared an exam or taught a class, your notes save other students hours. Students already share and buy notes on Telegram and WhatsApp; selling them from your own page just makes it organised: a fixed price, UPI payment, and the PDF delivered by email the moment they pay. This guide covers what to sell, how to prepare it, what to charge and how to find your first buyers.

What kind of notes sell

  • Exam notes: UPSC, NEET, JEE, CA, CS, SSC, banking and state exams, chapter-wise or the full syllabus.
  • Board exam notes for classes 10 and 12, especially subject summaries and solved important questions.
  • College semester notes for a specific university and course, where students search by subject code.
  • One-page revision sheets: formulas, dates, diagrams, mnemonics. Cheap, quick to make, easy to buy.
  • Handwritten notes from a topper or teacher. Neat handwriting with diagrams is a selling point, not a weakness.

Step 1: Turn your notes into one clean PDF

  1. Handwritten notes: scan each page with a phone scanner app (most phones have one built into the camera or files app), in good daylight, flat on a table.
  2. Combine the pages into one PDF per product, in order, with a contents page at the front.
  3. Typed notes: export from Google Docs, Word or Notion as a PDF so the layout stays the same on every phone.
  4. Keep it light. Under 10 MB downloads quickly on mobile data; 25 MB per product is the upload limit on Insidemetics.
  5. Add your name and store link in the footer of each page. If the PDF gets shared, people know where it came from.

Step 2: Decide what goes in each product

Students buy for a specific need: one subject before an exam, one chapter they're stuck on, or a fast revision before the paper. Build products around those needs instead of one giant file.

Complete notesEvery chapter, with diagrams₹299

Step 3: Price it

Students are price-sensitive, so price for volume. Most notes sell between ₹99 and ₹499: lower for a single chapter or revision sheets, higher for a complete, well-organised set for a competitive exam. Show what's covered (number of chapters and pages) so the price feels fair, and run a launch price with the regular price struck through for the first week.

Step 4: Put it on a store students can pay on

Make a store, add the notes as a digital product with the PDF attached, and connect Razorpay so students can pay by UPI. When they pay, they get a private download link by email straight away. Add the free chapter as a free download so anyone can try your notes first.

The product page says exactly what's covered, so the price feels fair.

Step 5: Find students who need your notes

  • Instagram: post one useful page or diagram as a reel or carousel, and end with “Comment NOTES and I'll send you a free chapter.”
  • Telegram: share free tips in your channel, and pin your store link with the free sample.
  • WhatsApp: share your link in study groups you're already part of, only where the group allows it.
  • YouTube: explain one topic on video and put the notes link in the description.
  • Time it with exams. Interest jumps in the six weeks before a paper, so prepare and post before then.

Step 6: Handle sharing calmly

Some buyers will forward a PDF to friends. You can't fully stop that, but you can make buying the easier choice: download links that expire (so forwarded emails stop working), your name on every page, a fair price, and updates that only buyers get by email.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to sell my own notes in India?

Yes, notes you wrote yourself are your work. Don't copy textbook pages, coaching material or other people's notes into them.

Can I sell handwritten notes?

Yes. Scan them into one clear PDF. Neat handwriting and redrawn diagrams are often what students like most.

How much should I charge for notes?

Most notes sell between ₹99 and ₹499. Charge less for a single chapter or revision sheets, more for a complete set for a competitive exam.

Do I need GST registration to sell notes?

Usually not until your turnover crosses the GST threshold. Check your situation with a CA.

Can students pay by UPI?

Yes. With Razorpay connected, students pay by UPI, cards or netbanking, and the money settles to your bank account.
