In short
- YouTube shares 55% of ad revenue on long videos and 45% on Shorts with Partner Program members.
- What you earn per 1,000 views (RPM) depends mostly on your niche and where viewers live.
- Estimates for Indian audiences in 2026: roughly ₹25–₹150 per 1,000 long-video views, and ₹5–₹30 for Shorts.
- Selling your own product to viewers can pay far more than ads per viewer.
There's no fixed rate. YouTube pays a share of the ad money your videos earn, so two channels with the same views can earn very different amounts. Here is how it works, and the rupee ranges creators with mostly Indian viewers can expect.
First, you need to be in the Partner Program
YouTube only pays ad revenue to channels in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP): 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. Fan funding opens earlier, at 500 subscribers.
RPM vs CPM
- CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad views, before YouTube's share.
- RPM is what you earn per 1,000 video views, after YouTube's share. RPM is the number that matters to you; YouTube Studio shows it under Analytics → Revenue.
- YouTube's share: creators get 55% of ad revenue on long videos and 45% on Shorts.
Estimated earnings per 1,000 views in India
| Niche | Estimated RPM per 1,000 views |
|---|---|
| Finance and investing | ₹100–₹150 |
| Education and exams | ₹80–₹120 |
| Tech and gadgets | ₹80–₹120 |
| Health and fitness | ₹60–₹100 |
| Cooking, travel | ₹50–₹80 |
| Vlogs and entertainment | ₹40–₹80 |
| Comedy, gaming, music | ₹25–₹60 |
| Shorts (any niche) | ₹5–₹30 |
Worked example: a fitness channel with 1 lakh long-video views a month at an RPM of ₹80 would earn about ₹8,000 that month from ads. The same views as Shorts at ₹15 would be about ₹1,500.
Why your RPM is higher or lower
- Niche: advertisers pay more to reach people about to spend money (finance, tech, education).
- Viewer country: views from the US, UK or UAE usually pay more than views from India.
- Video length: videos over 8 minutes can show mid-roll ads.
- Time of year: ad rates usually rise around festivals and the end of the year.
Earn more from the same viewers
Ads pay a few rupees per viewer at best. A viewer who buys your ₹299 notes or a ₹999 call pays you more than hundreds of ad views. Many Indian creators put one store link in every description: a free download for everyone and one paid product for the people who want more.
