In short
- Ship each preset as an XMP file for desktop and a DNG file for Lightroom mobile, and don't rely on ZIP files on phones.
- Sell a look, not a file: show before-and-after photos across different light.
- Small packs of 5 to 15 presets with a clear style sell better than huge bundles.
- Include a one-page install guide; most refund requests come from buyers who can't install.
Presets are one of the simplest digital products a photographer or content creator can sell: you've already built the look, and followers keep asking how you edit. This guide covers how to package presets so they work on every device, how to show them off, what to charge, and how to sell them from your bio link.
1. Build a pack around one look
Buyers pay for a recognisable style: warm film, moody city nights, bright travel, clean food. Group 5 to 15 presets that share that look, with variations for different light (sunny, overcast, indoor, night). A focused pack is easier to show and easier to choose than a 100-preset bundle.
2. Test on photos that aren't yours
A preset that looks perfect on your camera and your skin tone may fall apart on someone else's phone photos. Test each one on images from different cameras and phones, in different light, and with different skin tones. Adjust white balance and exposure so the preset is a starting point most buyers can use with small tweaks.
3. Export the right files
Adobe's help pages say Lightroom on mobile can import presets as individual .xmp, .DNG or .lrtemplate files, but can't open compressed archives such as ZIP files. So package your pack like this:
- XMP files for Lightroom on desktop (and mobile).
- DNG files, one sample photo per preset, for buyers who install on a phone.
- A ZIP of everything for desktop buyers, plus the individual files so phone buyers don't need to unzip.
- A one-page PDF install guide with screenshots for desktop and mobile.
4. Show before and after
Your product page should show at least three before-and-after pairs per pack, in different light. Short reels that swipe between the original and the edit work well on Instagram and TikTok. Only use photos you took or have permission to use, and get permission from anyone recognisable in them.
5. Price it
| Product | Example price | Job |
|---|---|---|
| 1 free preset | $0 | Collect emails, let people try your look |
| Pack of 8 presets | $15 | Your main product |
| Pack + video of your editing process | $29 | For people who want to learn your style |
| All packs bundle | $49 | Best value for your biggest fans |
A free preset is the easiest way to start: ask people to comment a word on your reel, send the free preset by DM, and show the full pack on the download page.
6. Decide where to sell
- Marketplaces such as Etsy bring shoppers who search for presets, in exchange for listing and transaction fees.
- Your own store suits you if your followers already ask about your edits: you choose the price, keep the buyer's email and pay no marketplace fee.
- Many sellers use both: a marketplace for discovery, and their own store for their audience.

Frequently asked questions
What file format are Lightroom presets?
Modern Lightroom presets are .xmp files. Lightroom on mobile can also import .DNG and older .lrtemplate files, but not ZIP archives.
How much should I charge for presets?
Many sellers price small packs low enough to buy on impulse and charge more for bundles or editing lessons. Start with a free preset and one paid pack, then adjust based on sales.
Can buyers use presets on their phone?
Yes. Give them DNG or XMP files they can import one by one in Lightroom on mobile, plus an install guide.
Do I need permission to sell presets?
Presets you made yourself are your own work. Make sure the preview photos are yours or licensed, and that anyone recognisable in them has agreed.
