How to Sell an Ebook on Instagram: A Step-by-Step Plan

A practical plan to sell your ebook on Instagram: set up the link in bio, post reels that lead to the sale, send the link by DM when people comment, and launch with a deadline.

In short

  • Instagram doesn't sell ebooks for you: it sends people to your bio link, so that page has to do the selling.
  • Asking people to comment a keyword, and replying with the link by DM, removes the hardest step: getting to your bio.
  • Post content that shows the result of your ebook, not posts that only say "buy my ebook".
  • Launch with a deadline and a launch price, then keep one reel a week pointing at the book.

Instagram is where many creators' most engaged followers are, which makes it a good place to sell an ebook. But Instagram doesn't have a checkout for ebooks: your posts create interest, and a link takes people to a page where they can pay and download. This plan covers each step, from your bio link to launch week.

1. Set up the page behind your link

Instagram lets you add up to five links to your profile, but most visitors tap the first one. Make it go to a page where your ebook is the first thing they see, with:

  • A cover image and a one-line promise ("Meal-prep a week of lunches in 90 minutes").
  • Three to five bullet points on what's inside.
  • A sample page or table of contents.
  • The price and a checkout that works in two taps on a phone.
  • Instant delivery by email, so buyers get the PDF straight away.

2. Turn comments into DMs

"Link in bio" asks people to leave the post, open your profile, find the link and tap it. Many won't. A comment-to-DM reply is easier: you ask viewers to comment a word, such as GUIDE, and an automation sends them the link in a private message. Meta's own documentation for Instagram lets businesses send a private reply to someone who commented on their post, which is how these automations work without asking for your password.

3. Post content that shows the result

People buy an ebook for what it helps them do. Post reels and carousels that give away one useful piece of it and show the result, then invite people to get the rest:

  • One tip from chapter 3, filmed in 30 seconds.
  • A before-and-after: the problem, and what changed after following the method.
  • A carousel summarising one framework from the book.
  • Answers to questions from your DMs, each ending with "comment GUIDE for the full ebook".

4. Launch with a deadline

  1. A week before launch, tell followers it's coming and what it covers.
  2. Offer a launch price, with the regular price shown, for three to five days.
  3. Post every day of launch week, each with the comment keyword.
  4. Share stories counting down to the end of the launch price.
  5. End the launch price when you said you would.

5. Keep it selling after launch

  • Post one reel a week that leads to the ebook.
  • Pin your best-performing ebook reel to your profile.
  • Add a small order bump at checkout, such as a printable workbook.
  • Offer the next step after purchase: a course, a call or a bundle.

Doing this on Insidemetics

We build Insidemetics, so we're biased. Your store link goes in your bio, your ebook page has checkout and instant email delivery built in, and Instagram Auto DM sends the link to everyone who comments your keyword, with no cap on DMs. Each automation shows how many people tapped the link and bought. Buyers pay into your own PayPal account, we take 0% of your sales, and plans are $29 or $59 a month, with a 7-day free trial and no card needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell an ebook directly on Instagram?

Instagram doesn't have a checkout for ebooks. You link to a store page from your bio or send the link by DM, and buyers pay and download there.

How do I send a link to everyone who comments?

Use a comment-to-DM tool built on Instagram's official API. It replies to each comment that contains your keyword with a private message holding your link.

How many followers do I need to sell an ebook?

There's no fixed number. A small, engaged following in one niche often sells more than a large general one.

What should I charge for my first ebook?

Price it below what the reader's alternative would cost them, such as a session with an expert or hours of research, and use a launch price with a clear end date.
